Well, since I don't do voice, but fax, my opinion might not be
considered "professional" here, and in fact, I can't even answer this
specific question.

But when dealing with low volume fax (afterall, I develop HylaFAX, not
PBX software), I would choose the Mainpine running in Class 1.0 over the
active ISDN hardware.

If I'm dealing with high volume fax, I would probably choose active ISDN
hardware, simply because with the EICON or Brooktrout fax boards I can
get 90+ active fax channels in a single server, and can easily support
multiple hundreds of concurrent faxes with a small cluster, with less
pieces of equipment needed for my spare N+1 redundancy.
