Re: [hylafax-users] 3com / USR feedback please

Michael,

Some GMC modems use topic chipsets. I've got one one of those kinda
modems. I actually tried a serial version of a GMC topic modem before
swapping it for a USB version (not GMC).

If you have a TP560 based chipset (check ATI3/6/9) then there is a
V.92 upgrade available you can test on one of your modems. Lightspeed
(who made 4 of my 33.6k modems when I rand a BBS)
www.lightspeed.com.tw has a V92 upgrade for these modems that *should*
work.

I have put a provisioning order on my home line for caller id. If it
doesn't work on my modem I wont be too concerned as my primary
telephone device is a X100P www.x100p.com / www.digium.com. (its only
good 14.4k fax - high number of system interrupts good for full duplex
voice though) - SO I'm very keen to know how you go with this. I think
Australia and NZ use the same standard for caller id (bellcore after
second ring).

If the reliability of sending faxes using G711 over VOIP (not data
tarrifs for voip from my ISP) isn't worth paying 10c a fax untimed
then I too will be in the market for a V34 fax modem.

My friends at Mainpine or should I say sparing parters are big
proponents of V.34 and obviously have a product that gets that does
that well.
If you already have a modem bank running on intelligent serial
hardware you need to know that they are internal use regular 16550A
compatible UARTs that also generate more interrupts that other
intelligent hardware (I used to use a digiboard ISA for my bbs). I'll
qualify that by saying it's no longer a big issue with APICs and
modern processor speeds.

I too have had one weird wedge from mine this month.

Cheers,

Luke

I had a few of those in a very low-volume setup. They'd wedge anywhere from once a week to once a month, but they were external, so I could power cycle them without power cycling the box.

They've subsequently been replaced with the cheapest modems I could find,
which have never wedged.
