Here's some tiffinfo output from a received fax:

TIFF Directory at offset 0x7aacc
 Subfile Type: multi-page document (2 = 0x2)
 Image Width: 1728 Image Length: 2152
 Resolution: 204, 196 pixels/inch
 Bits/Sample: 1
 ....


Notice the resolution is 204 x 196 pels/inch.  So with an image size of 
1728 x 2152 that comes out to be 8.47 x 10.9 inches... US letter.
