looking into it a little more I have discovered that postfix is ignoring the /etc/aliases file since I am using virtual domains 
using mysql. I tried to add the alias to the sql database but it does not work.
these are the lines from main.cf that are causing the system to ignore the aliases file as far as I can tell:
