I was just looking at the README for this svr_tty app.. Which may explain why the Parity didn't change to odd or none, however, I don't think it explains why sendfax works and pagesend did not? (for me at least)

The attachment on http://bugs.hylafax.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425 does some interesting things for dealing with modem resets and parity on TCP modems... my guess is that you're in the same boat as them.

I've never tested the changes there, and it would probably take a fair amount of time to analyze, test, and make suitable for the main distribution, but you may want to look over the code there to see what good you can get out of it. You certainly don't need the TCP-specific stuff as you are dealing with a device node and not with a TCP socket, but the modem reset stuff and the parity stuff seems applicable.
