Re: [hylafax-users] Hylafax using LAN SIP trunks

I started a thread asking if hylafax could be run on a stand alone server and what I mean by this is does asterisk have to be installed in order to use hylafax?
Not necessarily, but HylaFAX needs access to modems. Since I suspect
you're talking about iaxmodems the answer is that the iaxmodems really
should be on the same system as Asterisk. You can, in theory, use
tty-over-IP tools to connect the modems on the Asterisk box to HylaFAX.
It seems not but I've yet to come across anything that confirms how one would go about putting a server together that is just a hylafax server with an avantfax gui without asterisk.
If you were to use t38modems between Asterisk and HylaFAX (and not
iaxmodem) then you could probably do it as you're suggesting. But I've
never had much luck trying to get that configuration (Asterisk -->
t38modem) working.
From what I understand, the most confusing part to all who have taken on building such a server, has always been in getting the virtual modems working. In my case, I have a SIP gateway so am using IP on the LAN to get to the SIP gateway, which in turn is of course connected to PRI's.
The problem with that configuration is that the audio channels are
likely running over UDP connections and are therefore lossy and
therefore fax audio data will get lost. This is why iaxmodems should be
run on the Asterisk server where the PSTN connections are.
This works perfectly with an asterisk/hylafax server but if I didn't need asterisk, since I'm not really using it, it would certainly lower the complexities of a server.
Could someone please shed some light on this for me.
If your SIP gateway supports T.38 then you could use t38modem instead of
iaxmodem... in theory.
Thanks,
Lee.
