I think there was a change in a default setting of Ghostscript  which 
caused the incompatibility with HylaFAX. There are two possible fixes, 
but currently I cannot look for the details:
1. specify some additional parameter to the gs command when converting 
PS or PDF files  or
2. post-process the TIFF file created by ghostscript using tiffcp (?)

(IIRC HylaFAX+ implements option 2 while others chose option 1.)
