This sounds like a bug that was fixed a long, long time ago in HylaFAX+ 
dealing with MMR data format.  (I looked through the HylaFAX+ 
change-log, but I can't immediately find which change it was.)  Give 
HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 a try...
