The next time it happens restart faxgetty.  If that doesn't resolve it 
then you know the problem is either with the serial port or with the 
modem.  Since you have an external modem power-off the modem and then 
power it back on, then restart faxgetty.  If that resolves it then you 
know the problem is with the modem.
