I'm currently using "hylafax-5.4.1-1.fc12.i386" which is not too old, And will upgrade my modem asap to avoid the PPS/PPM Errors as much as I can.
I will send you the log file if I do get the chance to run both HF versions side by side, with the same USR modem on two computers.

So if you truly are running into the same problem that the linked-to thread is discussing, then it was fixed in HylaFAX+ 5.2.1 a long time ago (over two years now). It would be wise if you just went ahead and upgraded to 5.4.2 and tried to reproduce the problem there.
As a general rule you should be using the latest version whenever reporting what you believe to be a bug. Otherwise you run the risk of wasting your time on a bug that was fixed two years ago.
