Re: [hylafax-users] 'No response to PPS repeated 3 times' error

I know we used to have an ADSL service from Verizon that we canceled. I was also told that in order to fax we needed the microfilter or 'dongle'. The line we fax on was also the line the ADSL modem was hooked into. The phone jack for the line actually had a splitter on it. I guess to check all this I would call the phone company?

I will try replacing the filter and look into line testing.

No hardware has been updated, at least on my end. I have been doing software updates, like kernel upgrades. This in fact led to the kernel seeing the serial port as ttyS1 instead of ttyS0 which led to some confusion, however it was fixed. Nothing new has been added to the line. There was a line splitter on the fax line that I removed, but the faxes were working fine before with the splitter. Regarding the fax machine make and model, I can go back through some old log files and see what it is. Unfortunately, I have the fax cleaning script running so the log files only go back so far.

I know this was working in the past from looking at old log files and from getting getting the nightly fax log updates which have started showing 'Errs' in the table where before the count was zero. I also get error emails back from the HylaFAX server which I didn't get before either.

Thanks for all your help.

Best,
Steve Opalenski

Obviously the line type is important to know. If this is a POTS line with
ADSL 'on top' then the 'dongle' is probably a microfilter (often called a
splitter). The quality of these filters varies enormously and we have heard
of examples that have degraded over time... so, because they are cheap I'd
begin by replacing it. At the same time it's worth asking the telco to test
the line.... it's not unusual for rain to get into equipment or for a bird
to take up residence at the top of a pole...

If the problem is not fixed by a new filter and the line tests out OK then
you are looking for something else that has changed. Are you sure that no
software or hardware has been updated ? What about the phone line, has
anyone put another device on this line (fax or phone maybe) ? Could the
receivers have changed fax machine make/model without your knowledge ?

Obviously, if this is not a POTS line with ADSL then the 'dongle' is
something else entirely and a whole bunch of new questions will need to be
asked....

One final thought.... How do you know this was working in the past ?
