Not all of the machines sold today are V.34-Fax capable. That's
especially true for lower-end products. There are a few manufacturers
(HP comes to mind) that have standardized all models on V.34-Fax
support. However, that's not true for all manufacturers.
The only consumer-grade fax modems that you'll find that do support
V.34-Fax use the Agere (Lucent) chipset as Andrew has explained.
HylaFAX's V.34-Fax support began with a contribution from a Conexant
employee, but strangely enough I've never seen anything from Conexant
supporting V.34-Fax in a fax modem. There may be various manufacturers
that use (or have used) Agere's chipset; the specific ones that I know
of are Mainpine, Multitech, and Zoom. However, Zoom always disabled the
V.34-Fax capabilities, it seems (or never used the V.92 version of the
Venus chipset) - and now I think they're using a Conexant chipset
instead. And even then, both Mainpine and Multitech have gone through a
fair amount of effort to bring Agere's firmware up to production
standards - and even then the general recommendation for HylaFAX users
is to run them in Class 1.0.
I don't know if there are additional patents associated with V.34-Fax,
as Andrew has indicated, that extend beyond the basic patents that cover
V.34 more generally (which all modern modems support). However, getting
V.34-Fax support into fax modem firmware is not particularly trivial -
even with the proper DSP support being there - and as most fax modem
firmware has not changed significantly in a decade (they claim there
just isn't a significant-enough market to support development) you find
a very limited selection of choices when looking for top-of-the-line fax
modem cards.
At v.17 it takes me circa 3 minutes to send 2 pages of mostly text. I want to
speed this up.
At V.17 your pages of mostly-text should not be taking 90 seconds each.
They should be at somewhere between 30 to 60 seconds. If they're taking
90 seconds each then you've probably got some "grey" graphics on the
page or very tiny text or you're using a finer resolution than you
probably require.
