As a workaround for 4.1 beta2 and older versions use ModemResetCmds: "ATZ\nAT" (although it's a bit ugly :-)) Note, that this *workaround* won't be needed anymore, since CVS version (and upcoming beta 3) sends ATZ separately via ModemSoftResetCmd.
