This looks very similar to a problem that I just responded-to on-list a few minutes ago.

My guess is that your USR Sportster modem is giving you this trouble. In your case it's PPS-MPS, and there should be no disconnection.

So is there anything I can adjust in Hylafax to compensate - or the problem will persist until I change my hardware?

Probably not. However, all of my tweaks and improvements to the fax protocol are currently found in HylaFAX+ 5.4.2 (http://hylafax.sourceforge.net). Since you're not using that version you could try it and see if there is any difference in behavior. But, as I said, I doubt that you'll see any real difference.
