Sure, as long as your NSS isn't going back to try and look at
/etc/nsswitch.conf.

Stracing hfaxd would tell you if that's the problem.

If you're using the debian twin directories, make sure you stop/start
HylafAX to get their directory syncing done.

I did this by putting a /etc/group in $SPOOL chroot.  I don't have a
LDAP or any other fancy PAM setup to test against, only plain unix
passwd/group files.
