Re: [hylafax-users] List of compatible modems

Well, HylaFAX is old.

Actually, it was a long, long time ago that there was a "modem bakeoff" that Sam or Matthias put together... and they came up with some compatibility stuff. Since then we've just endeavored to make HylaFAX work with *any* modem so long as the modem will work at all.

That said, there is a vast difference between working and working well... and for the buggy-type of modems working well sometimes takes a fair amount of testing and configuration working, etc.

For example I have Multi-tech MT5600ZDX
external serial modem. It's not listed on the hylafax page but I
assume it is ok to use ?

The MT5600ZDX uses a Rockwell/Conexant chipset and it should be fine for 14400 bps (V.17) faxing. It doesn't do V.34-Fax (33600 bps).

Also I looked into the Zoom modems since they use Venus chipset. Would
any Zoom modem be good enough or do I need a specifc model. This
question applies for other modems such as Zyxel and Motorola.

Zoom is difficult to answer with any degree of certainty because they tend to have disabled features that were there by default from Agere. Thus V.34-Fax isn't on there. And then they changed chipsets... or so I hear. You'd probably be fine with a Zoom if you didn't want V.34-Fax.

There are also brands that are not listed.. maybe someone tried
Tellabs or Telindus ?

I've never worked with these.

Basically I need to replace those USR's with something good and cheap
before I go into the Fax Boards ..etc.

Good and cheap... well, good luck. :-) Maybe a $30 X100P with Asterisk and IAXmodem? Undoubtedly there's got to be some good, cheap modem that's on-par with IAXmodem... I'm just not using any to give you statistics.

Lee.
