Faxgetty can run from the command line.

You can put it in your init scripts. It will be used for picking up
the line. It un-locks the modem when it's not in use and listens for
rings. If you run another program it needs the line it will back off.

For sending only the faxmodem command tells hylafax that is can use a
modem if it needs to for outgoing calls.

Class 1/1.0 is best to use because Hylafax supports features that your
modem will probably not support. Class 2.0 is better if your modem
supports V.34 faxing (faster speed).

Andrews got a point. A successful detection of a fax in minicom when
answering is not the same as issues commands that send fax data. When
you run your modem and configure it with hylafax it will create logs
in /var/spool/fax/log/. That will help us what's going wrong after the
phone line has been answered.

You have run faxaddmodem as root, started the hylafax daemon and RTFM right? :)
