I'm not sure if the following instructions are what you are looking for:
1) Open a new xterm and run the following in it:
tail -f /var/adm/messages
2) Restart faxgetty process.
3) Copy and paste the new lines that appear in the xterm that you opened
in step (1)

I've had 2 occasions where I've got the "modem appears to be wedged"
error. The first time, the faxaddmodem script did not run to completion.
It hung for some reason and each time I tried to receive a fax, I got
that error. It turned out that I was not able to communicate properly
with the modem. I used the "cu" program to fix the communication problem
between the system and the modem. My system runs FreeBSD. On solaris, I
believe, the equivalent "cu" program is called "tip".
The second time around, I was using the serial port as a console and I
had getty running on it. Since getty came up before faxgetty did, I was
getting the "modem appears to be wedged..." error. I disabled getty and
the problem disappeared.
Hope the above helps.
