It's clear from Lee's comments that despite all of his backpedaling and public statements about mending his ways, this was exactly what it appeared to be from the beginning - an attempt to hijack the development of HylaFAX into Lee-land, where he would be sure to always get his way and at the same time guarantee that his customers' work made it into the mainstream.

Sure, it could perhaps look like that. But that's not what it was. If that's what it really was then I wouldn't have done things at Sourceforge - where commercialization of the site is not permitted, and where access to the code is free and open.

I think most people agree, the only honorable thing to do would have been to fork cleanly and compete with hylafax.org instead of trying to steal the community through a combination of website cloning, PR campaigns and misdirection.

This "only honorable thing" isn't what you did in 1998 when you forked HylaFAX from Matthias Apitz, used his HylaFAQ and Sam's HTML documentation to set up the website, registered hylafax.org (which name the community had assumed was trademarked by SGI), continued the same versioning series (4.0 to 4.1), and continued to use the "HylaFAX" name for the project. Was that really dishonorable? No, I don't think so. For the most part it was really a forced hand. It had to happen. The software development project simply evolved and migrated in the process. Same thing has happened again, and it's no less honorable than what happened in 1998.

There's nothing wrong with having a choice, I just would like to make sure people are aware they're choosing, instead of just thinking it's an 'upgrade'.

The HylaFAX+ website makes things very clear (as opposed to the hylafax.org website which makes no mention of HylaFAX+) as far as the choice goes.

As far as upgrading is concerned, HylaFAX+ contains all of what is found in the hylafax.org repository with the exception of a few key things which are deliberate and very clearly explained on the website. It's as much an upgrade as upgrading from XFree86 to X.org was. It's as much an upgrade as upgrading from 4.0pl2 to 4.1 was.
