I do not disagree with the correctness of your statement here. However, encoding the Subject header should not be necessary in most ISO-8859-1 cases.

Right, the ISO-8859-1 example was maybe not good enough. Nevertheless: ISO-8859-1 should be nothing like "a default setting" (example: ISO-8859-1 does not contain the euro sign, ISO-8859-15 does). I just saw a post from Torsten Mueller pointing out "using UTF-8 in the future development." I agree on that - and that's why I also posted a RFC2047 compliant UTF-8 example. -Konrad
