Re: [hylafax-users] T.30 T2 timeout, expected signal not received

Pardon my ignorance, but from the following excerpt from the docs, it
looks like Agere chipsets should work. However, I guess the keywords
are "new" and OCM.
Well, since I was the docs writer in this case the problem with the
documentation is that I haven't had any non-functional Agere hardware
with which to work. I don't doubt that it could exist... only I haven't
had the opportunity to use such a thing.
Is there any way to know whether a specific model
is "new" and not OCM?
If the website marketing does not specify what chipset model the modem
uses you would need to (should) contact the manufacturer by some other
means to get that information.
The reason I am asking is that I recently posted
a question on the mailing list about a specific modem I thought about
buying specifically for Hylafax and I am not quite sure whether it
will work or not.
And considering that no one has responded, I am assuming that it can't
be determined what chipset the modem has just by its model. Is this
correct?
"... modems with a new Lucent/Agere chipset (a.k.a. "Venus" found on
MultiTech, Zoom, and MainPine modems) all work very well in Class 1
and 1.0 (if the modem reports support for it via the AT+FCLASS=?
command) ..."
Hrmm... maybe I need to change that word "new" to something else. The
Venus chipset isn't "new" any longer. Agere has replaced the Venus
chipset, and I haven't had the opportunity to test any newer-than-Venus
equipment. Neither have I been able to test any Agere OCM equipment.
I guess my other question is, is there any way to know whether a modem
supports Class 1 and 1.0 before installing it (vs running
AT+FCLASS=?).
Again, if the website marketing material does not say you would/should
contact the manufacturer and they should say. Be aware that Class 1.0
means different things to different manufacturers. So if you're
specifically looking for V.34-Fax/SuperG3 support ask specifically about
that feature directly.
I buy my equipment from the net and you almost have to
buy blind because most of the ways to determine some parameter or
another is by having it installed and running commands against it.
Making a purchase via the internet does not necessarily mean a "blind"
purchase. If you've never used a piece of equipment before you aren't
any better off holding it in your hands on a store room floor than you
are staring at a web page. In fact, I generally find myself to be
better-informed of my web purchases.
