as i know the fax standard is defined as one standard so there should
be normaly no great differences in the modem firmware. I use a low cost 
taiwan modem without name - ok, the name is "fax modem" ;-)) - with 
hylafax and it works well.

If you have problems with the modem its a good idea to play a bit
with cu or minicom to see what could be wrong.
