Why not just save yourself the trouble and use PCI hardware modems (hey, 
no Linmodem driver!).  MultiTech, Zoom, USR, etc. make them.  About 
US$60-100.  Sure it's not $4 each, but hey - it's a real modem, not just 
an RJ-11 connector with a driver.
