First of all, I have to run the faxaddmodem script as root, so this script should have all the permissions it could possibly want, right? Then the permissions of the device: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 65 Apr 3 09:21 /dev/ttyS1 The user fax and sms are added to the group dialout, so there shouldn't be a problem either: # groups fax fax : fax uucp dialout The fax user has the same id as uucp, but a different (own) group id.
