my 2 cents:
maybe you upgraded to a new kernel ?
i myself installed kernel 2.2.3 and got the same messages from faxaddmodem
(/bin/stty: standard input: unable to perform all requested operations)

a point to look at:
as what  is your serial port definied?
/dev/modem or /dev/cu** or /dev/ttyS**

and then, is there an equivalent FIFO.**** ?

... ,but only my 2 cents ...
