Does Professional mean Courier or is it intended to make the Sportster
sound posher than it is.

This is your problem, as confirmed by:

Which is 8 seconds for 17877 bytes, or rather more than 20,000 bps,
which would require an extremely large amount of buffering in the modem
to avoid an overrun.  (There is some buffering in the OS, as, otherwise,
you wouldn't get more than 19,200.)
