Run faxgetty, and set the config files to answer calls as data only.

This is run by faxgetty, near as I can tell.

I don't believe Class 1 modems support adaptive-answering. And USR has
gotten an *EXTREMELY* bad rep for their Sportster models, so that
might be part of other problems you've had.
