Re: [hylafax-users] PCI or PCIe DB-25 serial cards?

Hi Jim,
before going for a full fledged serial card, have a look at your motherboard manual.
While it's true that many motherboard lack a ready-on serial port, most of them still have a standard header sitting on the PCB.
like this http://www.amazon.com/Male-Motherboard-Serial-Connector-cable/dp/B000JC31L4. I think it's pretty standard, but just to make sure to get the correct one for your motherboard: the pinout is on the motherboard manual as well.
At the moment I use on my Asus motherboard a serial header->connector that fits in a bay (no electronics) that I took from my first 486DX2 and it works out of the box. If you have some old PC lying around, have a look.
You can so avoid fighting with a separate serial card, exploiting your motherboard.

The less hardware in the way, the less hardware to contend with.
Bye,

Dear Jim,

I suppose you can get a serial card with DB-9 port. With most serial modem, they
should come with a signal cable which will fit to the modem at one end (in this
case, DB-25). At the other end, there will usually be a DB-9& DB-25 for fitting
to any serial port. If not, you can try an adapter. You can also get right the
way a DB-25 (Modem Side) to DB-9 (PC Side) Cable.

Lastly, you can also make your own with the pin-out which can be found on the
internet easily.

Hope this helps you.

Subject: [hylafax-users] PCI or PCIe DB-25 serial cards?

Hi List,

I'm looking for a recommendation. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and
trying to get the hardware ready for an uneventful Hylafax install. I
previously tried to install a USB modem, and ran into some driver
issues, so I decided to go with an external serial modem (seems to be
the safest option). I'm currently looking at the MultiTech
MT5634ZBA-115V, which is external and supposed to be v34.fax capable
... but it also requires a 25-pin DB-25 *serial* port.

Now the problem is that most motherboards made in this millennium
lack a serial port (especially of the rather exotic 25-pin variety),
so I suppose I'll need an expansion card. I've got 1 free PCI and 1
free PCIe card slot ... but I can't find a serial expansion card, with
support for a DB-25 connector anywhere. Does anyone know where I might
find one of these things? Does anyone have any experience with the
MT5634ZBA-115V and Hylafax? Any suggestions would be very
appreciated.

Thanks,

-jim
