Re: [hylafax-users] hylafax as T.30 debugger?

I want to go deeper and analyze the data the fax machines are really seeing.

Thus, my idea is to use Hylafax as the PSTN fax. Unfortunately I do not have real fax hardware, but will use a Digium card and Asterisk+Iaxmodem+Hylafax (via loopback). Now the question is - can I use Hylafax as T.30 debugger? Will it report the reason why some errors happen (e.g. timeouts ...).

You'll need to know how to read T.31 and T.30 and then the HylaFAX session logs will serve most of your purpose.

What part of the fax decoding will happen in iaxmodem and what will happen in hylafax?

iaxmodem acts as the Class 1 modem. Thus it will do modulation and demodulation as well as some level of V.21 HDLC work, all as requested by the software.

If you need to analyze the modulation specifics or V.21 HDLC stuff, then you'll need to work with the spandsp code low-level... and that will require you to know a lot more about V.17, V.29, V.27ter, and V.21.

Thanks,

Lee.
