The modem is manufactured by Genius (some Taiwanese brand, website: http://www.geniusnet.com.tw <http://www.geniusnet.com.tw/>). I used minicom ati3 command and here is the output (if it is of any use):

If this is entirely 100% reproducible with the new modem and is never present with the old modem then I would suggest that something is wrong with the new modem.


What the log is saying is that the modem, after apparently detecting the V.17 14400 bps carrier that the sender is transmitting, that the sender's signal never introduces any data (beginning with HDLC synchronization).

If the modem is correct then the sender's at fault... something is funny with the sender. But if you don't see the same thing with another modem then the chances are good that something's wrong with the new modem.
