Do you have other processes using the port besides a single faxgetty?  
Do this:

ps aux | grep fax

See what that says.  Make sure you only have one faxgetty per modem.  Do 
this:

lsof | grep /dev/ttyS0

Make sure that there is only one process with an open file for /dev/ttyS0.
