thanks for your reply. MaxDials parameter is fine
but it does not solve my problem at all.
When I send a fax, sometimes destination number is
busy (BUSY SIGNAL DETECTED error) because it is 
receiving a fax with many pages: in this case I wish 
that hylafax tries as many times as possible to send a fax 
(e.g 20 times with 3 minutes interval).
On the contrary if NO CARRIER DETECTED or NO ANSWER
errors occur I wish that hylafax gives up sending a fax
after a few tries (probably the destination number is wrong
or there is no fax machine responding on the other side or
destination has to switch from voice to fax).
It is very strange that these parameters does not
affect hylafax behavior at all: they are simply ignored
or I made some kind of mistake in my configuration.
I hope someone can help me.

Hi Luigi,

I don't know to much about this parameters, but I added this:
MaxDials: n
in the /etc/hylafax/hyla.conf and it works fine.
You can check it and many more in the hylafax-config man page.
