The other way this is commonly done is with a voice-capable modem (in addition to fax) and then to program the PBX to signal the DID via DTMF after the modem takes the line off-hook. HylaFAX instructs the modem to listen for the DID via DTMF, and then when received, it answers with normal fax tones. See the "SHIELDED_DTMF" stuff in 'man hylafax-config'.
