Seeing you gave up, I went out and checked the data sheet for your product.

It's not all that bad after all.
It's got a 64kb FIFO per port (56k-64k receiving). So divide the
number of interrupts given in my earlier example by /3-4. 16750ish
UARTs are used in in the Octo+

So 64 modems in my system would use about 12-15 times what the zaptel
is using - 14440-20000 interrupts per second or roughly 20% of system
processor use in IO. Would some high volume users with mainpine boards
want to comment on this?
