Yes, thank you.  And it does not reveal anything more to us.  It really 
does look like the modem malfunctioned.

Well, you should contact the manufacturer and follow their advice.  
However, you may want to give a recent HylaFAX+ 
(http://hylafax.sourceforge.net) release a try; it has a modem reset 
routine that *may* be able to recover the modem in this situation.  
(Then again, it may not recover the modem, either.)
