Recently, I came across a ghostscript parameter that I didn't know had even existed. The parameter is -dTextAlphaBits and can be used to antialias fonts when producing a TIFF fax file with the ghostscript tiffg3 drivers. Specifically, when this parameter is set to maximum, -dTextAlphaBits=4, the fax file created is significantly better in quality when using text material created with OpenOffice or LaTeX or enscript. After looking at the HylaFAX PostScript conversion script, ps2fax, I notice that this parameter is not utilized. Presumably, the wide variety of PostScript source material that may be presented to ps2fax precludes any general kind of antialiasing. But for those HylaFAX users that produce their own fax files, or for those who are certain of their source material, I would suggest modifying the ps2fax script to include this -dTextAlphaBits parameter. For graphical (non-text) source files, there is an associated -dGraphicsAlphaBits. Further information on these parameters is found in the Use.htm file that comes with the ghostscript source package. It would be worth checking out.
