I would suspect one or more of four things... 1) a V.17 incompatibility 
between the receiver and the modem, 2) an ECM incompatibility, 3) a flow 
control problem, or 4) an MMR incompatibility.  I'd say chances are best 
that the latter (MMR) is the case, but that's the harder one to work 
around because you're using 4.2.5/4.3.1 and not 5.0.2.  So run these 
tests...

I don't know what client you're using, so I'll refer to sendfax options, 
but you may need to modify them to suit your client...

To test V.17 incompatibility specify 9600 bps as a "max" speed:   
sendfax -B 9600

To test ECM incompatibility disable ECM with this:  sendfax -E

To test flow control problems with your modem change ModemFlowControl in 
your modem config file to "rtscts" if it is currently "xonxoff" or not 
present - or if it's currently "rtscts" then change it to "xonxoff".

To test MMR incompatibility you'll need to upgrade to HylaFAX+ 5.0.2 and 
then follow the instructions on this archived message (read the entire 
thread, too, if you run into troubles)...

However, do not use the 'echo "ModemSoftRTFCC: no"' part... since in 
5.0.2 DesiredDF is honored correctly now.
