Re: [hylafax-users] Using HylaFAX with answering machine on same line
They make a little "black box" device that will pick up and listen for fax tones. It picks up the line and sends a "ringing" sound to the other end, and if it hears the fax "beep" it rings the fax. Otherwise it sends it to the voice device.

Thank you for the pointer.
Yes, I did search the archives and found the useful information from
George Ball (well at least one posting). I'd like to pose the question:
Is there a way to do this without using distinctive ring? I've used
Brother and HP machines that accomplish this by letting the answering
machine pick up the incoming call and the FAX machine 'listens in'....If
it hears the FAX tones, it switches the line from the answering machine
to itself.
One way of accomplishing this is to build a circuit to reconfigure the
ring and tip lines depending on the incoming sounds. I would still need
to generate a digital signal from the FAX computer to the switch.
Any other suggestions/approaches to overcome this situation?
Thanks
John
