a) No, I couldn't
b) Yes, now I can. With likeauth option pam_unix module works fine with
HylaFAX in here. :)

So here is my config (stripped to show what's important):

auth       sufficient   pam_unix.so likeauth nullok debug
auth       required     pam_deny.so

account    required     pam_unix.so

session    required     pam_unix.so
