Oh, I am running a class1 modem, using hylafax-4.2.1-1rh3 and 
libtiff-3.5.7-13
Applicable code in hylafax seems to be faxd/Class1Send.c++, line 404

if (!TIFFReadDirectory(tif)) {
           emsg = "Problem reading document directory";

but the error code from TIFFReadDirectory is not saved, so we cannot 
tell what went wrong, can we?
