Actualy i haven't  read your message carefully enough. You should do

sendfax -n -d 5555555 something.txt  

and sendfax -1 -n -d 5555555 something.txt 

if the former won't work. If that still don't work  put 

ServerTracing:          0x201

in your etc/config file and show us your log. Not sure if you have to
restart hylafax for tracing to take off.
