Well, as you seem to be aware, the fact that it works one time doesn't 
mean that it will work another.  I strongly doubt that the hardware has 
become any more defective than it was in the beginning.  Various 
conditions beyond your control may have changed to influence the matter.

No, I don't think so.  You're welcome to try.  There are various 
benefits to updating to current CVS anyway.  It should be fairly safe.  
I run current CVS (as always).
