Well, AFAIK, the kernel doesn't need to recognize anything to use an 
external modem. The only drive is the one for the serial port. However, 
the current firmware in the external modem may not play nicely with 
HylaFAX. I don't even know if there is an updated firmware for the 
modem, but it's worth a shot.
