Do
gs -h
and check for the existance of the dirs it spits out.

Also, check if you have just one "gs" binary, or maybe more than one with
the wrong one coming first in the PATH.

hyla.conf has the "FontMap/FontPath added by faxsetup." writing or you added
the paths yourself?
