What error messages are promtped? Maybe you do not have the permission to 
connect to the HylaFAX-Server. Take a look into the file 'etc/hosts.hfaxd' 
which is located relatively to your HylaFAX-rootdir. (man hosts.hfaxd) 
Also, you should upgrade to the latest version of HylaFAX which is 4.1.1.
