Yes, I thought that HylaFAX really wanted ps, but ps2fax is "agnostic",
just feeds data to gs.

He could try

cd $fax_spool_dir/bin
ps2fax -o myfile.tif myfile.pdf

and see if myfile.tif is a readable tif file.
