To clarify this topic a bit:

Newer releases of, at least, RedHat, default to using MD5 passwords
in the /etc/shadow file.  If you've selected this option at install
time, and it's recommended that you do, then you can't use the
passwords from /etc/shadow for HylaFAX.  If you *didn't*, you can.
