My question is: is your installation (the version of which I don't
think you mentioned) looking for etc/hosts... or is it looking for
etc/hosts.hfaxd, which is what that file is called now.

Try renaming the file, and I usually just put unadorned IP addresses in
it, myself.  Let us know.
