Are you *absolutely* sure that your minicom (which works as you claim) configured the same way? The same port (/dev/ttyS0), the same speed (38400) etc? Are you *absolutely* sure that your modem has no aliases (e.g. /dev/modem), preventing the correct UUCP-style locking? Excuse me, but I don't believe in miracles...
