The problem was traced back to a faulty DB25<->DB9 adaptor which does not
have RTS/CTS lines wired! (stupid me. shouldn't have used those kind of
el cheapo cables.) After replacing the cable, setting up using 19200bps with
rtscts flow control, everything is fine.
